Somos Ana – celebrating female empowerment over gourmet food

In times like these, we are all looking for travel experiences that have a purpose. Experiences that are not only enjoyable but that also create some kind of positive difference in the world. We look for places that allow us to feel like we are a part of something that matters. The 100% female-run restaurant of Somos Ana is exactly a place like this.

The idea behind Somos Ana

In the midst of the pandemic, Alexandra Chía was reflecting on the stereotypes and stigmas that women face. Gender inequality has been around forever and is even more apparent in countries like Peru. Alexandra found out that 53,3% of employed women in Peru work in domestic and/or unpaid jobs. She decided it was time to change that. And that is how the idea of the restaurant Somos Ana was born.

In September 2021 the doors of Somos Ana finally opened. The name Somos Ana means ‘we are Ana’ and the name Ana is a palindrome. The message behind the carefully thought-out name is therefore “we are all the same, wherever we are, whoever we are and whatever gender we are”. The concept behind her brand is equality among all genders, empowering women, and erasing harmful and unjust stigmas.

However, the focus of Somos Ana is not only female empowerment. The restaurant has created a menu based on a circular economy philosophy. In other words, they have a low waste philosophy. The chefs take advantage of their given resources, recycling and reusing as much as they can, without compromising on flavor.

Staying true to their purpose, the restaurant only employs women. It is the first 100% female-run restaurant in Lima. From valets, to chefs, to mixologists, women have the chance to make their ideas heard. Somos Ana provides fair and safe employment opportunities to local women and allows them to demonstrate their abilities and develop their skills while recognizing initiative and employee-developed ideas.

Are their food and drinks as good as their ideas?

The innovative and organic menu at Somos Ana features various delicious fusion meals created with fresh and seasonal ingredients. From poke bowls to hamburgers, from ravioli to ceviche, there truly is something for everyone. There are so many mouth-watering options to choose from that we suggest having one of their signature cocktails while picking out your meal.

Speaking of drinks, the cocktails at Somos Ana are some of the most creative we have seen. They are all named after inspirational women. One example is a Vodka, sweet melon and Lillet Rosé cocktail named Tereshkova. Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to ever go to space over 60 years ago!

If we had to pick our favourite, it would be the Maria Landó, dedicated to a song, created by Susana Baca. Susana is a Peruvian folklorist best known for bringing Afro-Peruvian music to the world stage. She also served as Peru’s minister of culture. What makes this ginger beer, pineapple cocktail even more special is that it’s mixed with Matacuy, an Andean liquor originally developed by Wendy Weeks, the owner of El Albergue in Ollantaytambo, Peru.
