PRE-INCA CIVILIZATIONS
Discover and learn more about the Pre-Inca civilizations in Peru. Start with an excursion into the vast territory of Huascaran National Park with its clear water lagoons creating a landscape of natural mirrors and blue sky. Continue to the Chavin de Huantar temple, a religious center for pre-Inca Chavin culture. Going back on time, explore the archaeological site left by the Sechín culture en route from Huaraz to Trujillo. Unveil the past immortalized in their engraved monoliths where their stories are captured. End your trip with a visit to the largest mud city in the world: Chan Chan and to the most magnificent museum in North Peru the Royal Tombs of Sipan before flying back to Lima.

Itinerary

DAY 1 LIMA – HUARAZ (408 km – approx. 8 hours)
Departure in regular bus to Huaraz. Arrival and transfer to the hotel. Afternoon free to adjust to the altitude.

DAY 2 HUARAZ (B,BoxL)
Full day excursion to Llanganuco Lake and the Huascaran National Park. Visit different towns from ‘Callejón de Huaylas’ such as Carhuaz, Yungay and Caraz. Carhuaz is a very small town, but with a very lively Sunday market. The women wear a variety of wide-brimmed coded hats: Blue bands mean that they are married; red bands indicate they single. Continue towards Yungay, a site of the city that was destroyed by an earthquake and avalanche in 1972. Leaving Yungay by the road that leads to Caraz we reach the Lakes of Llanganuco: the Chinancocha (Female Lake), the Orconcocha (Male Lake) and Huahuacocha (Baby Lake) that lies between the two others. The turquoise waters of the Chinancocha reflect the majestic Huascaran and Huandoy peaks. Then we make a stop in Caraz, a pleasant town with a beautiful old churchu and also known due to its ‘Manjar blanco’ (creamy beaten milk and sugar).

DAY 3 HUARAZ – CHAVIN DE HUANTAR – HUARAZ (B,L)
Visit to the temple of Chavin de Huantar, declared a Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1975. The monument is an impressive construction of stone and contains enigmatic interior galleries. Its monoliths, its ‘Nailed Heads’ and its stone engravings demonstrate a pure and high aesthetic technique, yet moreover a refined sense of spirituality and worship.

DAY 4 HUARAZ – SECHIN – TRUJILLO (B) (315 km – approx. 8 hours)
Depart to Trujillo; along the way visit the Sechin ruins about 170 km north of the ruins at Paramonga, where the vast complex of Sechin Alto is located. The entire complex covers more than 10 square km. in the Casma Valley. Radiocarbon analysis dates the central Cerro Sechin back to 1290 BC, while construction on the overall complex was in full swing even earlier – by 1700 BC. The significance of these early dates means that it preceded the much better known site of Chavin de Huantar high in the Andes by nearly a thousand years rather than visa versa as had been thought previously.

DAY 5 TRUJILLO (B,L)
Full day excursion including Chan Chan and the Temples of the Sun and the Moon. Our visit ends with a lunch in Huanchaco a fishing village famous for its reed crafts used for fishing, made of Totora reeds and used in many places along the Peruvian coast.

DAY 6 TRUJILLO – CHICLAYO (B) (209 km – approx. 3 hours)
Departure to Chiclayo, visit to the archaeological complex of Huaca Rajada, the museum ‘Royal Tombs of the Lord of Sipan’ and the ‘Sican Museum’. Afterwards transfer to the airport de Chiclayo.
