EXTENSION TO PUNO AND SUN ISLAND
An extension trip for those looking for less visited places in Titicaca Lake. It includes places of genuine beauty in Peru as well as in Bolivia. Visit the Quechua community of Llachon, renown for its fine textiles and yet promoting sustainable tourism in the Peruvian side of the lake. The highlight in the Bolivian side is definitely the sunrise on the Sun Island.

Itinerary

DAY 1 JULIACA – PUNO
Upon arrival in Juliaca airport, transfer to your hotel in Puno.

DAY 2 PUNO (B)
You will enjoy a full day's excursion to Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Traveling by motorboat we will visit the floating islands of the Uros and the lesser known community of Llachon. This is a small village located at the top of Capachica Peninsula 1 ½ hour min drive from Puno in a very scenic part of the lake, which separates the Bay of Puno from the main lake. This tiny community with only 1,300 inhabitants belongs to the Quechua ethnic group. In this pristine environment the indigenous people still observe old traditions and laws. Most of them are farmers or weavers preserving ancient techniques. As Llachon is an out-of-the-way attraction it rewards the visitor with genuine scenes of countryside life. The visits include walks throughout the village, visits to local families, observation of farming and weaving activities and tasting local food. Or you can just hike to a scenic spot to enjoy incredible lake views – on one side the peninsula and a range of snowcapped mountains on the other side.

DAY 3 PUNO – SUN ISLAND (B,L,D)
After breakfast we depart to Bolivia. We drive along the south side of Lake Titicaca to the ancient shrine of Copacabana, on the boundary between Peru and Bolivia. On the way, we pass through the town of Juli, whose church is considered a jewel of colonial architecture. Once in Copacabana we visit its church and board a catamaran to the mythic Sun Island. Visit the Inca Garden, steps and fountain then the Inti Wata Cultural Complex. The complex features the Ekako Underground Museum and an interesting demo of Andean crops, medicinal herbs and Andean fauna. Activities in the Sun Island today include a traditional Kallawaya shaman's ceremony, a visit to the Titicaca reed shipbuilders display center and a unique sailing experience aboard a huge Titicaca traditional reed vessel visiting the Pilkokaina Inca Palace. A buffet lunch will be served on board as we cruise to the community of Challapampa in the northern part of Sun Island. On arrival you will be greet with local music and will have the opportunity to visit a small local museum. On board small wooden boats we sail towards the archaeological site ‘Chinkana’ the most extensive Inca remaining on the island. After the visit we have the chance to enjoy the overwhelming panoramic view of the lake and surrounding mountains as you hike to reach the pier and board the catamaran. Dinner on board witnessing a folkloric demonstration from the community of Challapampa. Overnight on board the catamaran in lake view cabins with private facilities.

DAY 4 SUN ISLAND – PUNO (B)
After breakfast you sail back to Copacabana to start your overland trip back to Puno. On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel.

DAY 5 PUNO – … (B)
At proper time you will be transferred to the airport for your flight.
